July 23th marked the day that a wealthy entrepreneur, Miles Nadal, bought the rarest pair of Nike's shoes called the moon shoes with the price of Rs 3 Crore. Even sneakerheads wouldn't buy that as the shoes were completely worn out, but somehow still have its massive value. Let's read about this story.

A wealthy entrepreneur - Miles Nadal - paid a record-breaking price of Rs 3.01 crore, to buy the ‘rarest’ pair of Nike’s sneakers at an auction on July 23. Known as ‘Moon Shoe’, the worn-out sneakers was part of the auction organised by Sotheby’s in New York.

It sets a new world record for the highest amount paid for a single pair of sneakers. Before ‘Moon Shoe’, the record for the most expensive pair of sneakers at an auction was held by a signed Converse that was worn by Michael Jordan in the 1984 Olympic Basketball final and it was sold for Rs 1.31 crore in 2017.

Sotheby’s head said that the estimated price for the ‘Moon Shoe’ was Rs 1.10 crore but Canadian collector Nadal splurged almost thrice the amount in an online auction. By doing this, Nadal has now added one more pair to his private collection of 99 hard-to-find shoes that he had bought on sale last week, as per reports in AFP

“We are excited the iconic Nike Moon Shoe achieved more than double the previous world auction record for a sneaker today,” Sotheby’s global e-commerce head said after the sale.

The shoes were designed by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman ahead of the 1972 Olympics, according to Nike.

Sotheby’s, better known for selling art works, teamed up with streetwear marketplace Stadium Goods to auction 100 pairs of the rarest sneakers ever produced in a venture.

According to reports, Nadal said after the purchase, “I am thrilled to acquire the iconic Nike ‘Moon Shoe,’ one of the rarest pairs of sneakers ever produced, and a true historical artifact in sports history and pop culture.”
