I Suffered From Head Lice Until I Discovered Home Remedies That Really Worked

A lice problem for me is no less than a nightmare. Who wants to continually scratch their head in public? It’s so humiliating and due to continued itching I also got head sores. In my case, I got head lice from a colleague who used to sit next to me. But head lice can be spread by coming into contact with clothing like hats and jackets, or personal items like brushes and towels.

I used all the harsh chemical remedies that actually damaged my hair without helping me get rid of the lice. So, I decided to try some home remedies that had no side effects.

Bright Side and I decided to test some known home remedies which not only prevent head lice but also make your hair healthier.

Olive oil

Olive oil does a wonderful job at killing lice. It is also an excellent tool for helping to loosen the nits from the hair shaft. Due to the thickness of olive oil, lice supposedly suffocate and die when the ooze plugs their breathing holes. This needs to be applied overnight under a shower cap because lice can survive without breathing for hours.

Use this method on a weekly basis.

Mayonnaise

Apart from being a great binder for macaroni salad, mayonnaise is good for treating head lice. Spread it liberally on the head and keep it wrapped in a shower cap for at least 3-4 hours. Shampoo and comb later for nits. Repeat a week later to kill any lice that hatched from nits that survived the treatment.

Tea tree oil

Of all the essential oils, tea tree oil is considered to be one of the most effective essential oils for head lice treatment. It has been found that 1% of the tea tree oil solution is capable of killing 100% ofhead lice within 30 minutes. Before you begin using the essential oil, try a small drop on the back of the patient’s hand to rule out potential allergic reactions. Don't see a rash or an itchy reaction? That's how you know it's safe to use.

Use it while combing your hair and mix it with lavender oil for even better results.

Salt

Salt can be used to eradicate head lice through intense drying.

  1. Mix 1/4 cup of salt and 1/4 cup of vinegar thoroughly.
  2. Gently spray the solution onto your hair so that it becomes slightly wet. Put on a shower cap and leave it for about 2 hours. Then wash and condition your hair.

Repeat this every 3 days to get positive results.

Garlic

Garlic is loaded with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agents which help get rid of lice. It is an excellent remedy for head licebut isn't safe to use on younger kids.

Grind 10 to 12 cloves into a fine paste and mix in a few drops of lime juice. Apply the mixture on the lice-infested scalp, leave for 30 minutes, rinse, and clean thoroughly. Repeat this process for a week until your hair is lice and nit-free.

Petroleum jelly

Petroleum jelly can have a stifling effect on roaming lice. First, apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly to the scalp before going to bed. Cover your head tightly with a shower cap or towel, and leave it on overnight. In the morning you may use baby oil to remove the petroleum jelly and comb your hair thoroughly to remove the lice.

Repeat this process for a few days.

Apple cider vinegar

In this method, you first rinse the hair with apple cider vinegar to loosen the glue that holds the nits in place. Allow the vinegar to sit until the hair is fully dry, then coat the scalp and hair completely with coconut oil to suffocate the lice. Pull all the hair into a shower cap and let the oil sit for at least 8 hours.

Later, you can shampoo and use a comb for extracting the nits.

Baby oil

An effective non-chemical method for controlling lice is with baby oil. Simply saturate the hair with the oil at night, wrap the head with a towel or shower cap to avoid staining sheets and pillowcases, then shampoo the hair in the morning. The oil must remain on the head for at least 8 hours to be effective. Repeat the process after one week.

Neem

Neem and neem oil contain an insecticidal ingredient known as azadirachtin which is a powerful natural insecticide that interferes with the reproduction and growth of head lice.

Neem leaf rinse: Put a handful of neem leaves in 3 cups of water and boil until the liquid turns green. Remove it from the stove, strain, and let cool. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual and follow it with a neem rinse. Repeat the rinse 3 times.

Neem leaf paste: Make a paste by grinding the neem leaves. Apply the paste to the scalp and leave for 30 minutes. Shampoo as usual. Repeat the process 3 times a week for 2 weeks.

Nean oil: Mix 6 drops of pure neem oil with a few tablespoons of coconut oil, massage the mixture well into your scalp, and let it sit for an hour. Rinse it off with shampoo and water. Repeat this process at least twice a week for a month.

Lavender oil

Lavender oil is considered to be a natural insect repellent. It remains on the hair and repels head lice. There is more than one way to use lavender oil to get rid of lice:

1. Mix it with a carrier oil; you can use coconut oil, corn oil, olive oil, sunflower oil or any other kind of natural plant oil as your carrier oil.

2. Mix a few drops of this essential oil in your shampoo to help keep them away once you've gotten rid of them.

3. Use it with tea tree oil while combing.

The mixture of oils gets stuffed into the breathing tubes of the adult lice, preventing them from breathing, and killing them. A repeat treatment is needed 7 to 10 days later.

All of the above remedies are safe and natural ways to treat head lice. Keep in mind that these are not 100% guaranteed to work, just like many other treatments and remedies.
