The island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island, is the largest of Hawaii's main islands with a total area of 4,028 square miles (10,432 square kilometers). It is also the largest island in the United States, and like the other islands of Hawaii, formed by a hot spot in the crust of the earth. It is Hawaii's most recently formed Island and is thus the only island to be active in volcanic activity. The large island is inhabited by three active volcanoes, including Kilauea, one of the most powerful activities in the world.

The highest point of the large island is the Mauna Kea volcano which is not operating at 13,796 feet (4,205 meters). The large island has a total population of 148,677 (as of 2000) and its largest cities are Hilo and Kailua-Kona (commonly known as Kona).

3. Oahu

  Oahu is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is inhabited by about one million people, about two-thirds of the population of the U.S. State of Hawaii. The capital of the state of Honolulu is located on the South East coast of Oahu. Includes the associated small islands such as the island of Ford and the islands of the Kāne ʻ Ohe Bay and off the east (with the wind) the coast, its area of 596.7 square miles (1,545.4 km2), making it the 20-largest island in the United States.

4. Kauai

  Kauai Original and pleasant (Garden Island) is the least commercially developed place in the Hawai archipelago. Waterfalls, scenic ride and over 60 shaded beaches for landscapes here. Some beaches have great scuba diving, other beaches have tidal pools suitable for young children and some are perfect for water sports. Land activities include hiking on the Kalalau trail of the Na Pali coastline, taking a day trip to Waimea Canyon and experiencing life on a cane farm at the Grove Farm Homestead Museum.

5. Molokai

  Molokai has a total area of 260 square miles (637 square kilometers) and it lies 25 miles (40 km) east of Oahu across the Kaiwi Strait and north of Lanai Island. The terrain of Molokai consists of two distinct volcanic mountains, known as eastern Molokai and western Molokai. These mountains, however, are extinct volcanoes that have since fallen. Their remains give Molokai, some of the tallest cliffs in the world. In addition, Molokai is known for its coral reefs and its south shore with the longest coral reefs in the world.  

The highest point on the island, Kamakou at 4,961 feet (1,512 m) is part of East Molokai. Most Molokai is part of the county of Maui and has a population of 7,404 (as of 2000).

6. Lanai

  As the smallest inhabited island in Hawaii, Lanai offers great gifts for visitors. Just nine miles from Maui yet a different world, Lanai can feel like two places. The first is found in luxury resorts where guests can enjoy world-class amenities and Championship-class golf courses. The other is found jumping along the rugged streets of the island in a 4-wheeler vehicle to explore the off-road treasures. 

7. Niihau

  Niihau is an island of Hawaii is hidden deep in mystery. Little is known about life on the Forbidden Island, as very few people have access to the vast, uninhabited tropical location.

Stretching only about 18 miles in length and about six miles wide, the arid island is about 17 miles off the west coast of Kaua'i. What makes Ni'ihau a mystery is that life here almost remains frozen in time. Since the Sinclair family was purchased for 10,000 for farming purposes in 1864, there were not many changes. There are no paved roads, no commercial buildings, no hospitals, and some modern comforts. A small population of fewer than 200 people lives in a small village called Pu'uwai in the west of the island and still communicate in their native language. Hunting and collecting is a way to maintain accumulated and almost no monetary work except for some work and craftsmanship such as selling Ni'ihaugrease jewelry made exclusively from shells taken from the pristine beaches of the Island.

8. Kahoolawe

  As the smallest island between Hawaii's main islands, Kahoolawe is an uninhabited island off the southwestern coast of Maui. Used as the U.S. The navy's bombing and missile for several years beginning in 1939, Kahoolawe is said to be "the island that was influenced by the most Pacific artillery" during World War II. The island was returned to the state of Hawaii in 1993 and was placed under the supervision of the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Committee (KIRC), which oversees cleanup and restoration. Since 2011, the island and neighboring seas are currently limited to the public. The Hawaiian Islands, Kahoolawe is an uninhabited island off the southwestern coast of Maui.
