Alfred Eisenstaedt, one of LIFE Magazine's most famous photographers, clicked this iconic photograph of a U.S. Navy sailor grabbing and kissing a stranger—a woman in a white dress—on Victory over Japan Day on August 14, 1945, in New York City's Times Square.

2. 'The Kiss' by Auguste Rodin

Auguste Rodin brilliantly captured 'The Kiss' with marble sculpture he made in 1882. It shows Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini, two lovers from Dante’s The Divine Comedy, in deep embrace locked in a now-iconic kiss. It's considered to be one of the most famous depictions of love in art.

3. The Socialist 'Fraternal Kiss'

Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and East German President Erich Honecker shared a “fraternal kiss” to honour the 30th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic in 1979 in the name of solidarity exchanged between Eastern Bloc pols in the time when the Soviet Union existed.

A legend and world champion, Jamaican runner Usain Bolt kissed the track after he won the 100m and 200m races in record times at the London Summer Games on Aug. 9, 2012, a first in Olympic history.

8. The longest kiss

The longest kiss that was 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds long got placed in the Guinness world record book. It was exchanged between Ekkachai Tiranarat and Laksana Tiranarat at a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not event in Pattaya, Thailand, between February 12-14, 2013. The two winners also won a $3,300 cash prize and two diamond rings.
